Photographic Licensing
My creative works are protected by United States and international copyright laws and may only be used by permission. If you would like to license one or more of my images, contact me and we’ll discuss the usage you have in mind.
Please note that I never sell the copyrights to my images, nor am I interested in providing usage licenses free of charge soley in return for exposure. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Creative Commons Licensing
Specific versions of my some photographs—such as those that appear on Wikipedia—are licensed under a Creative Commons license. These license terms only apply to the files they are attached to and not to larger resolution files of the same image that may appear elsewhere under a different usage license.
Attributed Editorial/News Use Licensing
Many, but not all, of my photos can be licensed for non-exclusive editorial use by news organizations. If an image is available to be licensed for news/editorial usage, then following standardized pricing guidelines apply, except in very special cases.
In Print
- Up to ¼ interior page: $200
- Up to ½ interior page: $300
- Up to full interior page: $400
- Two interior page spread: $600
- Cover: $1500
On the Web
- Up to 250px on longest dimension: $200
- Up to 500px on longest dimension: $300
- Up to 1000px on longest dimension: $400
Attributed Non-Editorial Commercial Use
Commercial use licenses outside of the scope of editorial usage are priced depending on how the image will be used. In order to determine whether an image can be licensed for a particular purpose and to have a fee quoted, please get in touch via email and provide as much information as you can about your intended use including size, circulation, and distribution region.
Attribution Text
Attribution must be given as “James Duncan Davidson” or “Duncan Davidson” if space does not allow for my full name. In some cases, additional attribution requirements may exist, such as photographs I’ve made for a particular organization. When used on the web, the attribution text must link back to my website at http://duncandavidson.com.
Unattributed Use (Editorial or Commercial)
The use a photograph without attribution for any purpose requires a $2500 fee per image in addition to any normal licensing fees.
Comps and Alternates
I typically have a selection of alternates in my archives for any image that I’ve published. If you would like to see a selection of alternates—or a larger size file to use as a comp when a file you already have access to isn’t large enough—I’m more than happy to help as long as my schedule allows. My standard studio rate of $100/hr applies with a 1 hour minimum. If you do end up licensing an image, this fee will be applied to licensing charges.
